Blog Assignment 1: ARTIST STATEMENT

What defines one as an artist? Recognition? Selling art? Walking the walk and talking the talk? If so, then I'm most definitely not an artist. I think the term artist today holds a certain level of pretentiousness. I see myself as more of a media content creator, but maybe one day I'll be labeled an artist, who knows? I mean art is meant to be subjective, no?

Ever since a young age I've always had an interest in art, from drawing and sketching to painting. As I got older I tried honing my skills in these areas, but also developed interest in others such as: photography, video and digital art. I received my Associate's Degree majoring in New Media Technology, which focused on web design and digital art, but also delved very loosely into audio and video editing. Now that I'm pursuing my Bachelor's Degree as a Media Studies major I want to explore and concentrate on digital photography and video, but mainly video.

I am a big fan of the horror and documentary genres and would love to pursue a career in creating both or at least taking part in the creation process. I believe that some of the best horror movies created are when they address issues that are currently going on in society like: The original Night of The Living Dead and the recent Get Out, both dealing with race; Rosemary's Baby dealing with a woman's right to have control of her body and the governing bodies that are trying to control it; and It Follows dealing with the paranoia of sex and disease, theses are just to name a few. I believe documentaries focusing on these social and moral issues would be great source material for horror movies, which is why I have such an interest in them, besides the fact that I just really like creepy shit.
